HERMITAGE, Tenn. (May 31, 2012) A surgical team at TriStar Summit Medical Center has performed their first series of general surgery cases using the da Vinci® SiTM Surgical System.  To date, gallbladder, colon and hiatal hernia surgeries have been successfully completed.  Additional da Vinci general surgery procedures are expected to follow.

While minimally-invasive general surgery is not new, John Boskind, M.D., joins a growing group of national surgeons who have chosen to receive additional training so that his patients can benefit from the improved dexterity and precision that rigid laparoscopic instruments can’t provide.  More specifically, the da Vinci® Si™ System offers unique features that are designed to provide additional clinical benefits and efficiency in the operating room, many of which translate to patient benefits.  Benefits  of the da Vinci® Si™ include:

  • Enhanced 3D, high-definition vision of operative field with up to 10x magnification
  • Superior visual clarity of tissue and anatomy
  • Surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand

TriStar Summit Medical Center is proud to be one of the first hospitals in Middle Tennessee to offer this technically advanced surgery.  This clearly demonstrates the hospital’s leadership in providing patients with the most up-to-date minimally-invasive surgical options.  “We are truly excited to be a leader today in the surgical treatment of tomorrow,” said Dr. Boskind.

The robotic system enhances the surgeon’s skill with computer technology, enabling him to see vital anatomical structures more clearly and perform surgical procedures more precisely. The technology extends the surgeon’s capabilities by providing a three-dimensional view of the operating field and improving access to the surgical site through small instrument “ports” that eliminate the need for large incisions. The system also provides full freedom of movement at its instrument tips, allowing precise operation in a closed chest, abdomen or pelvis.

TriStar Summit offers various types of robotic-assisted surgeries. In addition to general surgery procedures, hospital surgeons perform robotic-assisted surgery in urology and gynecology. TriStar Summit also offers a wide range of minimally-invasive conventional laparoscopic surgeries.
