TriStar Health took the lead in state-of-the-art women’s services with the introduction of digital mammography last year. With one in eight women developing breast cancer within her lifetime, TriStar invested in this state-of-the-art technology for the early detection of breast cancer when it is most treatable.

Evaluating treatment options and determining a course of action as quickly as possible are very important. If detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 97%.

From the patient perspective, digital mammograms are similar to traditional film mammograms. Both use x-ray to generate images of the breast. However, a digital mammogram uses a special detector to capture and convert x-ray energy into a digital image.

Digital mammography offers a number of advantages including:
  • Computer-aided detection technology that decreases the possibility of human error during interpretation.
  • Ability of radiologists to manipulate images, allowing them to detect smaller masses.
  • Fewer return visits due to improved visibility of breast tissue.
