(July 26, 2011) - Each hour, 100 American lives are claimed by vascular disease, a form of cardiovascular disease that primarily attacks the blood vessels.

Picture of a Patient

Vascular disease is the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. When calcium deposits or fats build up in the arteries, it can narrow the vessels to a point where the blood cannot pass through. When this happens in or near the heart, it causes a person to have a heart attack. When the vessels that are blocked carry blood to the brain, it leads to a stroke.

With no needles or radiation and less than 15 minutes of your time, you can find out your risk for heart attack or stroke and get information about your circulation.

Summit Medical Center will offer AngioScreen® - a simple, non-invasive vascular screening designed to provide you with information about your heart rhythm, neck and leg arteries, blood pressure, body mass index and an overall fitness assessment. AngioScreen® measures your Ankle Brachial Index, a screening for blockages in the leg arteries that is normally not performed by doctors, unless patients are symptomatic.

Immediately following the AngioScreen®, individuals will receive a consultation in addition to a color ultrasound picture printout and digital record showing a picture of their carotid arteries.

The screening will be offered on Tuesday, August 16, in the hospital’s Community Classrooms. The cost of the screening is $50, and appointments are available from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Space is limited; to schedule a screening call TriStar MedLine at 615-342-1919.
