What to expect at the ER

Triage

Nurses help incoming patients, prioritizing care based on the severity of patients' illnesses or injuries. This process is called "triage." ERs always treat people in critical condition first.

We will require the following information when you arrive:

  • The reason for your visit
  • Your driver’s license or another form of identification
  • Your name and date of birth

Provider exam

Next, you will be evaluated and treated by a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. ER physician assistants and nurse practitioners have advanced education and training to quickly evaluate, diagnose and treat medical emergencies.

Pre-treatment

The triage nurse will perform some diagnostic checks to determine the severity of your condition. We may require laboratory testing (such as blood work) and/or imaging exams (such as X-rays) to fully understand your medical needs.

Exam room

After triage, you will be moved into an exam room. You may receive further assessment and treatment or, if necessary, be admitted to the hospital. Once your treatment is complete, the physician will prepare discharge paperwork so you can leave. Your nurse will give you written instructions on how to care for yourself when you get home, prescriptions (if applicable) and what follow-up treatment you may need.

Discharge

Before you leave, we will collect payment and insurance information. An emergency physician or nurse will also give you next steps for your care, such as arranging a follow-up appointment with a specialist or meeting with your primary care physician.

Directions to ER

Our ER is on the north side of the hospital, which faces Sam Ridley Parkway. Free parking is available directly outside the ER's entrance. Our address is:

The ER is open 24/7. In addition to taking care of emergency patients, the ER handles all after-hours admissions and outpatient testing.
