Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Smyrna, Tennessee

Although most infants are born healthy, special care is sometimes needed for babies who arrive too early or are critically ill. For those newborns, the NICU at TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center is ready to provide advanced care. As part of our maternity unit, the NICU is just steps away from our childbirth delivery suites. Other special features of this unit include a family bonding room and certified lactation consultants.

For a free physician referral or more information, call TriStar MedLine® at (800) 242-5662.

Knowing that advanced care is close by when it is needed helps families feel more comfortable at the hospital. A premature birth can lead to medical complications, but rest assured that our Level II NICU is ready with the neonatal care you would need in that situation.

Specialized care at our NICU

Having a NICU on-site benefits the mother, baby and family. Our facility is designed to enable parents to visit their babies - getting to touch, hold and feed them - whenever possible. This ensures that even if special attention is needing following birth, you will not miss the chance to foster the early bonds so important to a child's development.

The unit provides round-the-clock, individualized care from:

  • Board-certified neonatologists
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Other specially-trained healthcare professionals

Newborns treated at our NICU

Our NICU cares for babies born prematurely (between 32 and 39 weeks old) and as small as 3.3 pounds. Infants born at full term (39 to 40 weeks) with a condition requiring advanced care may also be moved to our NICU.

24/7 neonatal monitoring

We use web streaming cameras in the NICU. Each camera is mounted on the wall near the infant’s bed. Families can view their babies 24/7 through a password-protected live stream. This technology allows family members who cannot be at the hospital for the newborn's arrival to stay connected and close to their growing family. It also enables parents to leave the hospital while still being able to monitor their child at the NICU.

Access to Nashville pediatric experts

As part of the TriStar Health family of hospitals, we collaborate with the pediatric team at The Children's Hospital at TriStar Centennial in Nashville. This relationship ensures that pediatric specialists are available 24/7 for immediate, remote consultations.

NICU at TriStar Health

The neonatal intensive care unit works to provide critical care to newborns who are ill or premature. Many factors may lead to a newborn being admitted to the NICU, including low birth weight or complications during delivery. The NICU staff works closely with parents to develop a treatment plan for their newborn.
