Cancer care in Nashville, Tennessee

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a scary and overwhelming experience. At TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center, we will do our best to minimize that fear and stress, supporting you throughout the entire treatment process. We will also connect you with the latest innovations in cancer care as well as support groups, clinical trials and other resources throughout the Greater Nashville area.

Types of cancer we treat

The experienced oncologists at TriStar Southern Hills offer treatment for a wide range of cancers, creating an individualized plan of care based on your diagnosis and goals. Types of cancer we treat include:

Cancer screening services

Our cancer care includes advanced technologies with which we can diagnose or evaluate your progress through treatment. Some of these imaging services include:

  • Biopsies
  • Bronchoscopies
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans
  • Endoscopies
  • Fluoroscopies and other nuclear medicine services
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
  • Mammograms and other breast imaging services
  • Ultrasounds

Diagnostic biopsies

During a biopsy, a surgeon takes a tissue or cell sample to check for the presence of cancer or evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment plan. Patients at our hospital have access to several types of diagnostic biopsies, including:

  • Bone marrow biopsy (the collection and examination of bone marrow to check tissue health and blood cell production)
  • Core and fine needle biopsies (using a needle to extract a sample from a mass or lump)
  • Sentinel node biopsy (a biopsy to determine if cancer has spread into the lymphatic system)

Core biopsies versus fine needle biopsies

Core and fine needle biopsies are similar. However, core biopsies use a larger needle. Both procedures have pros and cons in terms of invasiveness, duration of the procedure, interpretation time and diagnostic abilities (e.g., what type of lesions the biopsy can diagnose). Your doctor will discuss your options with you so you can make an informed decision about which biopsy is best for you.

Cancer treatment

Our oncology surgical suites are equipped for the most advanced surgical procedures, including video-guided, microscopic and laser surgery. We also offer advanced cancer treatment options, including:

  • Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy used to treat prostate cancer)
  • Chemotherapy (a drug that kills cancer cells and prevents tumor growth)
  • Intensity modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT (a type of radiation therapy using photon and proton beams conformed to the specific shape of a tumor)

Additional oncology services we offer

Our support for cancer patients goes beyond diagnosis and treatment. Cancer care at our hospital also includes:

  • Cancer programs tailored to your specific diagnosis
  • Clinical trials available through the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute and the wider TriStar Health family of hospitals
  • Genetic testing to evaluate your risk of cancer and inform potential preventive health options
  • One-on-one consultations with cancer care specialists
  • Cancer support groups
