Heart specialists in South Nashville

Cardiologists at TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center help you prevent, treat and recover from heart disease and other conditions. From screenings to diagnostic cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies to rehabilitation, we partner with you to keep your heart healthy.

Accredited cardiology services

Our hospital is an accredited Chest Pain Center, as designated by the American College of Cardiology. This means we are able to provide lifesaving treatment for heart attacks as quickly as possible. If you are having chest pain or heart attack symptoms, our teams are prepared with the processes and technology to quickly diagnose and treat you. You will also receive comprehensive follow-up care and be connected with a cardiologist if you need it.

Innovative heart attack treatment

We use a new approach to help detect a heart attack earlier and more precisely than traditional testing. This approach—a high-sensitivity cardiac troponin test—allows providers to measure the presence of a heart-specific protein (troponin) much quicker. This enables them to identify heart attacks much earlier—when treatment options are more favorable.

Troponins are proteins that help muscles contract and are released into the blood when cardiac cells die. A high-sensitivity cardiac troponin test detects troponin in the blood. This can reveal signs of an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or a heart attack.

Heart screening and imaging

Our heart and vascular center uses a variety of diagnostic and imaging tools to accurately assess heart conditions. Our team performs both inpatient and outpatient procedures, such as:

  • Angiography
  • Vascular angiograms
  • Cardiac calcium scoring
  • Cardiac catheterization (angiogram) radials
  • Doppler ultrasound
  • Echocardiograms
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs or EKGs)
  • Fractional flow analysis
  • Gated blood pool scan
  • Holter monitoring
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Nuclear studies/stress tests
  • Stress electrocardiography
  • Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
  • Tilt tables
  • Treadmill testing

Cardiovascular surgery and treatment

TriStar Southern Hills offers patients access to board-certified cardiovascular surgeons and heart specialists. They are skilled in performing a variety of procedures, including:

  • Carotid stenting
  • Cardiac defibrillator implantation
  • Coronary ballooning (PTCA)
  • Coronary stenting
  • Endovascular grafting and stenting
  • Interventional heart catheterization
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
  • Peripheral vascular angioplasty
  • Thrombectomy
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) therapy

Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a general term for minimally invasive procedures used to clear blocked blood vessels. The most common procedure, balloon angioplasty, involves a catheter with a balloon on the end. The catheter delivers the balloon to the clogged blood vessel, where it is inflated. This reshapes the inside of the artery to allow blood to flow more easily. To prevent these areas from eventually deflating, doctors often use stents (metal coils that spring open) to keep the artery from closing.

Cardiac rehabilitation

After undergoing major heart surgery or other cardiovascular procedure, it is important to make sure your heart properly recovers. Our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program allows patients to exercise under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It also gives patients the opportunity to receive counseling services and learn more about how to keep their heart healthy.

Heart disease prevention

As our understanding of heart disease grows, so does our comprehension of risk factors and prevention. For example, research has shown these factors are definitively associated with an increase in heart disease:

  • Heredity
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Advanced age
  • Physical inactivity
  • Smoking

Men and postmenopausal women are also at a greater risk. Other contributing risk factors, which are less precisely understood, include stress, obesity and socioeconomic status. The more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance they will develop cardiovascular disease. However, many of these risk factors can be minimized or prevented. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors and ways to reduce them.
