Heart specialists in South Nashville

Cardiologists at TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center help you prevent, treat and recover from heart disease and other conditions. From screenings to diagnostic cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology procedures to rehabilitation, we partner with you to keep your heart healthy.

Accredited cardiology services

Our hospital is an accredited Chest Pain Center, as designated by the American College of Cardiology. This means we are able to provide lifesaving treatment for heart attacks as quickly as possible. If you are having chest pain or heart attack symptoms, our teams are prepared with the processes and technology to quickly diagnose and treat you. You will also receive comprehensive follow-up care and be connected with a cardiologist if you need it.

We use a new approach in our Emergency Department to help detect a heart attack earlier and more precisely than traditional testing. This approach—a high-sensitivity cardiac troponin test—allows providers to measure the presence of a heart-specific protein (troponin) much quicker than conventional troponin testing. This enables them to identify and rule out heart attacks much earlier—when treatment options are more favorable.

Diagnostic heart screening and imaging

We use a variety of diagnostic and imaging tools to accurately assess heart conditions. Your physician may recommend several non-invasive screening procedures such an echocardiogram or stress test to help identify any potential problems. Those tests may result in additional invasive procedures such as a cardiac catheterization (or angiogram) to help diagnose a heart condition. Our specialized team guides patients through the different procedures and works alongside our expert cardiologists to ensure proper diagnosis.

Non-Invasive Imaging and Tests

  • Doppler ultrasound
  • Echocardiograms
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs or EKGs)
  • Holter monitoring
  • Nuclear studies/stress tests
  • Stress electrocardiography
  • Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
  • Tilt tables
  • Treadmill testing

Invasive, interventional & electrophysiology cardiovascular procedures

Once a heart condition has been diagnosed, TriStar Southern Hills offers patients access to heart specialists who can help develop individualized treatment plans using a variety of devices and minimally invasive techniques that often allows the patient to return home the same day of the procedure. Our procedures include:

  • Cardiac catheterization (angiogram) femoral and radial approach
  • Fractional flow analysis
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Coronary ballooning (PTCA)
  • Coronary stenting procedure using radial (arm) approach
  • Electrophysiology procedures
    • Cardiac defibrillator implantation and management\
    • Pacemaker implantation and management
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
  • OCT- Optical coherence tomography
  • Pulmonary Artery Pressure Monitoring
  • Temporary ventricular support device
  • Thrombectomy
  • Insertion of Mechanical Support Devices for critically ill patients with heart attacks or cardiogenic shock.

Angioplasty/Stenting

Angioplasty is a general term for minimally invasive procedures used to clear blocked blood vessels. The most common procedure, balloon angioplasty, involves a catheter with a balloon on the end. The catheter delivers the balloon to the clogged blood vessel, where it is inflated. This reshapes the inside of the artery to allow blood to flow more easily. To prevent these areas from eventually deflating, doctors often use stents (metal coils that spring open) to keep the artery from closing. We do this procedure primarily from the arm (radial approach) which provides patient’s convenience and early ambulation after the procedure.

Cardiac rehabilitation/education

After undergoing major heart surgery or other cardiovascular procedure, it is important to make sure your heart properly recovers. Our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program allows patients to exercise under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It also gives patients the opportunity to receive counseling services and learn more about how to keep their heart healthy.
