One year after an accidental fire forever changed his life, David Johnson returned to TriStar Skyline Medical Center to thank the physicians, nurses and colleagues who guided him through his recovery.

David, a retired mineral miner from Cowan, Tennessee, was severely burned on November 27, 2023. David was in his garage working on a project when a spark from a propane heater ignited microfiber cloths and hand sanitizer in the back pocket of his overalls. His injuries—covering 17% of his body—required emergency air transport and 46 days of intensive care, rehabilitation and support at TriStar Skyline, home to one of the region’s leading burn centers.

“Everyone did a good job and took excellent care of me,” David said. “The burn unit was awesome, especially Micah and Victoria, and the rehab staff worked hard to get me moving again. Even the food and nutrition team made sure I got what I needed—or wanted, like ice cream.”

From the burn intensive care unit to rehabilitation, David’s journey was supported by nurses and support team members that he now considers family. He credits his recovery to their skill, compassion and the prayers and encouragement of loved ones, including regular visits from Chaplain Bill.

David’s wife, Brenda, stayed by his side every night, recalling the care and comfort provided by the staff during their darkest moments. “They made a terrible life experience the best it could be,” she said.

During a follow-up appointment this week, David expressed gratitude to care team members who made a lasting impact, including Candy, The’Andra, Liz, Dawn, Buffy and Savannah.

“I’ve been at many hospitals, but this is one of the only places where I’ve actually felt at home,” David said. “People here genuinely care—from the nursing staff to rehab to housekeeping. We really got to know everyone like family.”

Now, David is back to the hobbies he loves—rebuilding engines, tinkering in his garage, attending his grandchildren’s events and traveling with Brenda.
