Recently at TriStar Greenview, Jenn Cooper, a critical care nurse, went above and beyond to help a patient’s family through the tragic loss of their loved one. Jenn emotionally supported the family in what was a horrible time in their lives and comforted them as they made the difficult decision to proceed with withdrawing care. She reached out to the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) and discovered that the patient elected to be an organ donor.
Organ donors are heroes who have made the decision to save and heal lives. As such, they deserve to be honored, commemorated and celebrated. An Honor Walk is a special, powerful ceremonial event to commemorate the life of a patient whose organs are being donated. Celebrating and recognizing their selfless act and desire to give others life offers the patient’s friends and family, and the hospital staff, an opportunity to recognize the heroism of their loved one and patient. As the patient was rolled from the CCU to the OR, Jenn had the patient’s favorite song by Patsy Cline playing as the staff gave honor and the family followed.
“Amazing things happen within our walls every day, however, this one speaks so loudly to me and our team,” shared Jami Lieber, CNO for TriStar Greenview Regional Hospital. “Thanks to Jenn, organ donation was a comfort to this patient’s family. It also comforted those who cared for her. It’s meaningful for our staff, for our doctors, nurses that are caring for patients who pass away and to know that some good and something meaningful came out of that tragedy.”
