Program Overview

The PGY-2 critical care pharmacy residency provides residents with the knowledge and experience necessary to practice as pharmacy specialist within intensive care areas. The program prepares the resident to provide evidence-based, cost-effective pharmacotherapy through direct patient care and academic exercises. Rotations include medical surgical intensive care unit (ICU), advanced medical surgical ICU, critical care cardiology and ECMO in the coronary care unit (CCU), cardiovascular surgery ICU, neurosurgical ICU, nutrition support, evening ICU, emergency medicine (at Skyline Medical Center Level 1 trauma) and many elective opportunities. Residents are encouraged to complete the teaching certificate through the University of Tennessee if they have not already completed one.

This residency offers a diverse pharmacy experience that provides residents with opportunities to practice in a variety of specialties. In addition to clinical rotations, residents are required to complete a major research project, perform medication use evaluations (MUE), deliver formal presentations and participate in distribution and clinical staffing services. There are numerous opportunities for teaching, including serving as preceptors for pharmacy students from Belmont University, Lipscomb University and University of Tennessee.

Residents are mentored by outstanding, experienced and dedicated preceptors who are committed to patient care and training of new practitioners. Most of the preceptors hold board certifications or credentials in their specialty areas. In addition, residents will interact with many leading physicians, medical residents, nurses and other health care professionals during their patient care activities or working with multidisciplinary care teams. Residents also have opportunities to work with healthcare leaders at the HCA Healthcare corporate or TriStar Division offices.
