Kim Hankins is a patient care technician at TriStar Hendersonville who is taking the opportunity to change her career at 49-years-old. After working at a kidney dialysis center, Kim decided to go back to school to become a nurse. After completing her prerequisites, she wanted to find a job that would work well with her school schedule. She started nursing school a year ago, and Kim joined TriStar Hendersonville as a patient care technician. She says she loves the challenges, opportunities and flexibility the position has afforded her.

“I absolutely love working at TriStar Hendersonville,” said Kim. “I do something different every day, and the hands on skills I am acquiring have helped me tremendously in my nursing education. I am able to talk about scenarios in class because I have witnessed them. Plus, TriStar Hendersonville allows me to work three days a week and works with my school schedule which helps me so much.”

Kim is excited about her new career path and can’t wait to care for patients as a registered nurse.  She loves the patient interaction and being there for patients when they are in need.

“Patients often are alone, and I love being a familiar face to them,” said Kim. “I have proved to myself I can do it. You are never too old to take a chance on a new career, new opportunity or new path.”

Kim plans to graduate from nursing school in May 2024 and transition into the Nurse Residency program offered at TriStar Hendersonville.

“Kim’s story is one example of the many personal and professional growth opportunities we have here at TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center,” said Lisa Hochstetler, chief nursing officer. “The structure and support we have through HCA Healthcare allows us to come alongside colleagues and offer resources as they enter the healthcare field or grow in their current role.”

Kim says it has been a team effort to get to where she is now. Her husband has been by her side supporting her to ensure she completes her education.
