Heart and vascular surgery

If your heart or blood vessels have been damaged — by conditions such as heart failure or congenital heart abnormalities — cardiovascular surgeons work to repair them. They may use traditional surgery or minimally invasive approaches, which can enable a faster recovery for you.

Cardiovascular services

Our board-certified cardiovascular surgeons use the latest surgical techniques and equipment. This includes minimally invasive and robotic surgery, off-pump bypass and percutaneous procedures.

Cardiovascular surgeries we perform

We offer the latest in cardiovascular surgical treatment options. This includes implanting the first MEMO 4D semi-rigid mitral annuloplasty ring in the world. This implant allows surgeons to treat a broader range of patients who have mitral valve regurgitation. Additionally, our surgeons continue to lead the nation in developing less invasive cardiac surgical techniques, allowing patients to recover much sooner.

You also have access to many other advanced surgical procedures at our hospital, including:

  • All-arterial coronary grafting
  • Atrial septal defect repair
  • Beating heart surgery
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
  • Heart valve surgery
  • Minimally invasive coronary bypass
  • Septal myectomy
  • Sternal reconstruction
  • Surgical procedures to treat heart failure
  • Surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation
  • Tricuspid valve repair/replacement

Coronary angioplasty and heart stenting

For your heart to function properly, it needs a steady supply of oxygen. The coronary arteries supply this oxygen-rich blood to the heart. When a coronary artery is healthy and has no blockages, the oxygenated-blood can flow easily. Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when those blood vessels become narrowed or blocked.

To treat this heart problem, your doctor might recommend angioplasty. Angioplasty is a procedure in which a balloon catheter is inserted into the artery to improve the blood flow to the heart.

Angioplasty is only a treatment — not a cure — for CAD. You must still change unhealthy habits that may have created this heart problem. There are also other possible treatments for CAD, including medication, bypass surgery and procedures such as coronary stents and atherectomies.

Heart and vascular specialty services

Our multidisciplinary team in Middle Tennessee performs cardiovascular, thoracic and vascular surgery, delivering exceptional heart care for patients. Our services include:

  • Aortic surgery center: At our aortic surgery center, hybrid procedures are combined into one personalized procedure. These hybrid procedures offer less invasive solutions for aortic disease.
  • Cardiac rehabilitation: We work with patients and their physicians to develop and incorporate nutrition, exercise, risk reduction and stress testing as well as inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.
  • Complex thoracic surgery: We offer a variety of procedures to treat diseases of the lungs and esophagus, such as lung cancer, pulmonary disease and esophageal cancer.
  • Endovascular surgery: We use catheter-based intervention technology and traditional surgical treatment for aneurysms, arterial disease and vascular disease.
  • Electrophysiology studies: We treat many different forms of arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, using electrophysiology, mapping, ablation procedures and surgical techniques.
  • High-risk valve clinic: Our team offers patients treatment options such as medical therapy, balloon valvuloplasty and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
  • Interventional cardiology: We offer interventional procedures such as cardiac catheterization, stents and embolization protection devices for your heart needs.

Our hybrid operating room is a specialized operating space equipped with medical imaging devices. There, surgeons are able to perform both open and laparoscopic procedures in the same visit, preventing multiple procedures under anesthesia and reducing additional risks.

Comprehensive valve program

Through the Heart and Vascular Center, we offer a valve program that combines the efforts of referring physicians, cardiologists, interventionalists and cardiovascular surgeons. These specialists collaborate to assess and determine the best treatment options for patients with complex valve disorders.

Our valve program offers complete options for valve intervention, including:

  • Catheter-based interventions
  • Mitral and aortic valve repair
  • Mitral chordal replacement
  • The Ross procedure (pulmonary autograft)
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
