What is physical therapy

Physical therapy aims to enhance and restore function and quality of life. To reach that goal, our therapists will help you regain movement and flexibility by testing your muscular strength, endurance, balance and joint mobility. They may also perform manual therapy, such as joint mobilization and therapeutic massage. Moreover, to ensure your full recovery, we provide personalized home exercise and safety programs.

Specialized therapy for specific disorders

Physical therapy is an essential part of treating pain and/or movement dysfunction caused by disability or disease. Through proper evaluation and treatment, therapy can minimize your pain and maximize functional potential. Physical therapists also educate you about injury prevention and personal fitness. We customize physical therapy to meet your unique needs.

Rehabilitation after joint replacement surgery

We offer inpatient and outpatient physical therapy programs following your joint replacement surgery. We can tailor therapy to help you maintain independence and get the best possible range of motion after surgery. Some common joint surgeries we provide rehab for are:

  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Shoulder replacement

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy enables you to return to your day-to-day activities. This can include everything from helping children with disabilities take part in school and playtime to empowering adults to regain their independence. We incorporate therapeutic exercise, daily living activities and cognitive training. Our occupational services include:

  • Assessment of living and/or working environment and adaptation recommendations
  • Energy conservation and work simplification techniques to improve endurance
  • Hand and upper extremity therapy for traumatic and repetitive injuries
  • Sensory integrative therapy
  • Therapy to improve motor skills and communication skills
  • Vocational and life management skill development

Speech therapy

Our speech therapy helps you with speech and language disorders. It may also be used following illnesses or injuries that affect language and/or swallowing skills. Speech therapists work with people of all ages to help them regain or develop these skills. Speech therapists may use:

  • Electrical impulse therapy (therapy using small, electrical impulses to help strengthen the swallowing muscles)
  • Language and cognitive retraining
  • Video fluoroscopic swallow studies (imaging studies using X-rays to evaluate how well a patient swallows)

Neurotherapy

Neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy (seizure disorders), affect cognitive function and mobility. We customize our physical, speech and occupational therapy programs to meet the unique challenges of these conditions. For example, stroke recovery focuses on swallowing, speech, cognition and other areas as needed by each patient.

Pediatric therapy and rehabilitation

Our pediatric therapists have extensive experience and training to care for your children. These physical, occupational and speech therapists create individualized pediatric rehabilitation programs for infants and children of all ages. Our pediatric therapists help patients with orthopedic, developmental and neurological diagnoses, including:

  • Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome and other developmental delays
  • Prematurity
  • Spina bifida

We administer physical, speech and occupational therapies in an outpatient setting. Play is incorporated into most treatments, which helps maintain a child's interest.

Therapy referrals and appointments

A physician's referral is needed for rehab services. If you believe you may benefit from our therapy programs, talk to your doctor. Your physician can conduct a medical evaluation and determine if therapy is needed.
