Causes of back pain

Back pain affects four out of five people at some time in their lives. It comes in many forms and can occur with or without sciatica (pain resulting from a problem with the sciatic nerve). Common causes of back pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Chronic or acute injuries
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Nerve and muscular problems

We can use a variety of imaging techniques to identify the cause of your back pain. Whatever it is, chronic or acute, our spine doctors can treat it. If your back pain is related to overuse or physical activity, you may also work with a doctor specializing in sports medicine.

Treatment for back pain

After identifying the cause of back pain, we can move forward with treatment. In many cases, this type of pain can be relieved through medication, rest or rehabilitative therapy. We may also recommend advanced surgery as a last-resort option for patients with chronic back pain.

Spine surgery

Your doctor may recommend spine surgery for pain that does not improve through other orthopedic care. Spine surgery is also a treatment option for serious disorders or diseases of the central nervous system (such as myelopathy) and trauma. The procedures our surgeons perform include:

  • Cervical foraminotomy (surgery to widen the area where the spinal nerve roots exit the spinal column)
  • Discectomy (removal of the central portion of an intervertebral disc)
  • Kyphoplasty (surgery to treat progressive vertebral compression fractures)
  • Laminectomy (removal of a portion of the vertebral bone called the lamina)

Physical therapy and rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is an important part of recovery for many patients, whether they have just had surgery or a serious injury. Our physical therapists will go over the ideal exercises and best practices to help you recover.

Neurotherapy is also available through physical therapy services in the wider network of TriStar Health hospitals. This is a form of rehabilitation tailored to conditions affecting the central nervous system.
