Heart attack

It occurs when the blood vessels leading to the heart are blocked, resulting in less blood and oxygen reaching the heart muscle. When the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, chest pain results. This is often a symptom of a heart attack.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Chest palpitations
  • Cold sweat
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Paleness
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
  • Unexplained anxiety
  • Weakness or fatigue

A stroke affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or burst. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the oxygen it needs, so it begins to die.

It is important to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. The less time it takes for you to receive treatment, the more muscle can be preserved and enable a better recovery. Act quickly if you or someone you know experiences:

  • Confusion or trouble speaking or understanding
  • Difficulty seeing in one or both eyes
  • Loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
